HTC shows off new Android-based phones with dedicated HW Facebook button

On Tuesday, HTC unveiled a number of devices, including a pair of phones specc'ed at lower-levels, but with one big addition: a dedicated hardware Facebook button.

These are not examples of "THE" Facebook phone; Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg took time at Mobile World Congress to dismiss the idea of a Facebook-branded handset. He did say that in the coming year users "can expect do see dozens of phones with much deeper social integration than we have so far."

Meanwhile, the HTC ChaCha (with keyboard) and HTC Salsa (touchscreen only) were announced, with a dedicated hardware Facebook button, and it's a continuing trend toward more Facebook, more places. On Monday, SIM maker Gemalto announced a SIM with Facebook embedded (in a very basic form), and last week INQ announced it was working on a Facebook-centric phone.

Both the ChaCha and Salsa sport Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread). The ChaCha has a 2.6-inch, 480 x 320 resolution landscape touch screen, while the Salsa has a 3.4-inch, 480 x 320 resolution touch screen. Both phones come with a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a VGA front-facing camera.

In terms of the innards, both phones have a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 chip, which fits with their seemingly low-end target, and 512MB of both RAM and ROM storage. In the U.S., AT&T will get exclusivity on these phones. Both are expected to launch globally before the end of Q2 2011.
