Warner Bros. launches 'App Editions;' iDevice versions of movies in the App Store

Warner Bros. has launched "App Editions" of its movies, with the first two entries being "Inception" and "The Dark Knight."

The way it works is that the App Editions themselves give consumers the first 5 minutes of a film, plus part of the bonus content (which could be games, trivia, soundtracks and / or soundboards. Buyers unlock the content via an in-app purchase. "Inception" is $11.99, and "The Dark Knight" is $9.99.

Interestingly, "The Dark Knight" can be purchased in Blu-ray (BD-Live) form for $9.99 at Amazon.com, while "Inception" is selling for $13.99 in a two-disc Blu-ray special edition. The point is that these could easily be ripped to the iPad (fair use) for the same or only slightly more than these in-app purchases. Of course, that doesn't include the in-app bonus content, but you do get a Blu-ray version for home use at the same time.

The App Editions allow Warner Bros. to sell videos to iDevice owners in countries iTunes Movie Stores do not exist. They also offer social components via Facebook and Twitter.

The apps are packaged as universal apps for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch and Warner Bros. is planning App Edition releases throughout 2011, with selections including both new and back-catalog movies.
