'Click to Call' feature added to make phone numbers easy dialing links in Gmail

Google has added a slight, but still very useful modification to Gmail. It builds on the Google Voice integration from August of 2010. The new feature makes phone numbers appear as links, and brings up the Google Voice dialer when clicked.

The feature is called "Click to Call." Just click the number, and the dialpad pops up, with the number you’re trying to call already populated in it.

Click dial, and viola (except if you haven't installed the voice and video plugin installed, you will be prompted to install that first. In addition, Google has added a little green phone icon next to numbers in your contacts which you can use to quickly dial. You have to mouse over the number to see the green phone icon, though.

When Google introduced the Google Voice addition to Gmail, it originally said domestic calls would be free through 2010, but they later changed to extend it through the end of 2011. They added that as long as international calls provide enough revenue, they will try to keep the service free domestically
