RIM planning BlackBerry Messenger apps for Android and iOS

Android and iOS will soon see versions of BlackBerry Messenger, according to a report from BGR on Thursday, March 3. It's still just a rumor, but it's certainly interesting if RIM is deciding to take its popular mobile instant meesaging service to "the enemy."

After all, it's iOS and Android that are sucking market share away from RIM's devices. Reportedly, RIM will offer BlackBerry Messenger with reduced fucntionality on its rival platforms. Android and iOS might not be able to share photos or location, for example.

There is some degree of hope that users of the Android or iOS versions might be attracted to BlackBerry devices.

BGR says Android is definitely being worked on. Timing is unknown, just as with pricing. Howver, BGR's sources are pretty sure that the Android version will launch this year. Android's openness were the obvious reason that RIM took on Android first. Despite this, the plan is to build an iOS version as well.
