Sweden, Denmark, both look to SMS-based postage

Actual mail (meaning snail mail) use is constantly dropping, so why force customers to use actual stamps? Sweden is going to go stampless, by allowing customers to pay their postage via SMS instead of physical stamps.

Sweden will be joining Denmark, which will launch similar system on April 1st. Users send a text message and receive a special code in return. That code is then written on the letter, serving as proof that the postage has been paid.

Anders Åsberg, heard of marketing and development with Swedish postal service Posten AB said that no date firm has been scheduled to introduce the SMS service in Sweden. However, he said it would not be before summer.

Åsberg added that the risk of forged postal codes with this scheme is no greater than with traditional stamps; both must eventually be read by postal service scanners. There will be no increase in postal rates when the service goes into effect, he said.
