LinkedIn Today adds professional social media twist to news aggregation

LinkedIn has launched a new service called LinkedIn Today, which sounds like just another news aggregator, but isn't really. It leverages all the professionals signed up for the LinkedIn service to create "three social views of professional news."

First is "what your connections and coworkers – people you know – are sharing." Second is "what your industry peers are sharing." And finally, third is "what stories are interesting to a wider audience, outside of your industry."

So it's a news aggregator, with a social media spin, but one that is tailored to your industry and even by your LinkedIn connections.

Sounds interesting, but what if I want to do this on my mobile device. Well, there's already an app for that. LinkedIn has released an iPhone app that includes both the ability to see what your connections are reading and an option to save articles. Articles saved via the iPhone app will show up under “Saved” on linkedin.com/today, and you can do it in the reverse direction, as well.

All we have to say is: where's the Android version?

This, of course, works far better if your profile is kept up to day. When it filed for its IPO, LinkedIn noted that “a substantial majority of our page views are generated by a minority of our members.” If folks are coming to view the news daily, they might just keep their profile updated as well.

You can view a short video on LinkedIn Today below, and the site is here.
